How to build a DIY speaker cabinet

The amplified speakers for sale on the market are many and it is possible to find one for every purpose and for every pocket. From the tiny ones to be always carried with you, perhaps to be connected to your smartphone or tablet, to the impressive ones for parties at home or outdoors. Whatever use you have to make of it, therefore, you can count on an effective and tested product.

However, if you are passionate about do-it-yourself, do-it-yourself and all those activities that require little manual skills and technical knowledge, you may also have a certain predisposition to building loudspeakers by spending relatively very little.

What do you need?

Before starting this small business it is good to know everything you need. Therefore, equip yourself with a lot of vinyl glue, acrylic paints or sprays specially designed for wood to paint the outside of your case, screws to hold together the various pieces, wooden panels of the size of your project and of course all the electronic components that will then have to be inserted inside as the subwoofer, the tweeters, a reflex tuning tube and a passive crossover with 8 Ohm impedance.

It usually starts with the creation of the individual pieces of wood to be used for the construction of the external structure. If you do not have your own project, it is very easy to find several on the web, to build both compact and more complex and large loudspeakers to be connected to a television and enjoy a Home Cinema system.

How to proceed

Mark the diameter of the tweeters and woofer on a sheet of paper or any other support. You will have to drill holes in the wooden panels designed to accommodate these elements as large as the latter, do not worry if they are smaller than they should be because you can sand them until all the splinters of wood are removed and reach the desired diameter. Carry out the procedure for both crates and set aside the two panels that you will need later during the assembly.

The rear panel, on the other hand, must have two openings, one used for the passage of the reflex tube, necessary to let the air moved by the woofer in and out, while the other will be used for the passage of cables or the contact flange. Here too, as for the front panel, mark the diameter of the components to make more or less precise holes and then smooth them with special tools until you reach the desired size.

The rest of the wood components will not need a lot of work and you will simply have to cut the panels according to the scheme of your project to obtain the outer shell. When you have completed this step, before installing the components, you can paint the external part of the panels to give the boxes the color you prefer.

It is important to buy acrylic colors or sprays designed specifically for wood, so you will not have problems during the sealing phase. To give a matte or glossy finish, you can also use matte or enamel sprays. These, in addition to giving a pleasant and professional appearance to the cases, also protect the colors from any damage caused by time or wear.

When everything is dry you can start the assembly. However, remember not to close the speakers with one of the side panels yet in order to install the electronic components inside.

You just have to choose a convenient place to install the crossover, remembering that the cables must all converge in this element, both those coming from the tweeter, the woofer and the terminal holder flange. When you have completed the connection of the electronic components, and before closing the casing, check its operation, so you can intervene immediately and without causing any damage to the structure. After confirming that everything is working, you can close the speakers and use them to listen to your favorite music or even enjoy a movie to the fullest.

Amplified or pre-amped speakers?

The more experienced could of course build more complex devices, perhaps equipped with internal amplifiers to create real active speakers, however it is still recommended to proceed in small steps, especially if it is your first project of this type. A good way to understand how a cash box works is to open one that you may not use or that no longer works. You will then be able to see with your own eyes all the electronic components and how they are actually connected to each other.

Remember, of course, to disconnect the appliance from the power supply when performing this procedure, even if you think the speaker is no longer functional. When we talk about amplified or active speakers, we are talking about those devices that do not need anything other than electricity. These products represent the majority of the speakers for sale on the market as they are simple to use and can be connected to any device, from TV to laptops.

Passive or pre-amplified speakers, on the other hand, need an external amplifier in order to function. They are certainly more uncomfortable but they represent the best choice for musicians and professionals of the sector who want a precise sound and can therefore intervene directly on the individual components to achieve the desired effect.
